17th – 21st Jan

&nbsp
The course run from 17th – 21st of January had 9 children attend.
&nbsp
Throughout the week the 9 children&nbspwill be learning Basic Skills, having a go at all the different disciplines of Kayaking and learning about water safety.
&nbsp
Monday and Tuesday focussed on the skills and strokes used to control your kayak, each child has also passed the Basic Skills course recognised by Australian Canoeing and will recieve a certificate for their skills.
&nbsp
Wednesday morning the children had a lesson with State Canoe Polo players in polo bats. They learnt the new skills of passing, throwing and defending the polo ball, added to the boat handling skills they had learnt the previous days.
Wednesday afternoon the children had a go at a slalom course. As there is no moving water at West Lakes they got a taste by doing a flatwater slalom course using the slalom gates.
&nbsp
Thursday the children will be doing a longer paddle, with the&nbspoption of stopping at a beach around West Lakes for their morning tea instead of coming back to the building.
&nbsp
Friday will give the children a chance to try Flatwater Sprint Racing in the racing boats. These boats are skinnier and capsize more easily. A SASI Scholarship holder will be showing the children one of the&nbspboats that he uses and letting them have a go sitting in it.
&nbsp
On Friday each child will have a Basic Skills Certificate presented to them and a barbeque will be served for both parents and children.&nbsp
