River Murray Canoe Guide

Complimentary information for the River Murray Canoe Guide Chowilla map available from visitor information centres (VIC) or tourism offices located in Berri, Barmera, Renmark and Loxton or from Canoe South Australia. The guides include a comprehensive map and information on canoeing/kayaking trips ranging from one day to extended trips in the Chowilla Game Reserve.

Please note: The Chowilla Canoe Guide is currently unavailable and under review due to changed conditions.
Do you still want a printed guide? Canoe SA will only continue to supply the Chowilla Guide if there is a demand for it. Please contact Canoe SA and let us know if you still want maps (on waterproof paper) continued to be supplied in shops and VIC’s
Changes to the area include the installation of a regulator about 1 km upstream of the junction with the River Murray (Grid reference: 871368). Work is also being undertaken on the wiers on Slaney Creek and Pipeclay Creek. Please see the updated information on this website about progress of that work including restrictions to paddling in the area and portaging around construction sites. Click here.
Visitors and paddlers in the area are reminded that entry to the Chowilla Creek system by “The Shute” (the fast flowing creek about 100m downstream from Boarder Cliffs Customs House) is considered dangerous for paddlers unfamiliar with fast flowing water. An alternative is to enter the creek system by a short portage from the main river into Hypurna Creek and is a viable option for groups of varying ability (portage in the vicinity of river marker 638)
Other River Murray Canoe Guides avaliable on this site: Katarapko and Loch Luna.
