SEA WEEKEND 2007

Sea Weekend 2007 is an oppertunity for kayakers of all levels to share their passion for the ocean.  Held at Victor Harbor from 10-12 March the program focuses on Australian Canoeing sea skills and leadership awards.  

This comprehensive sea kayaking workshop aims to provide training and assessment for all levels of sea kayakers from the complete beginner to instructor level. The course will be based at the Victor Harbour Caravan Park, with paddling experiences to take place in the local area according to the conditions. A range of equipment including kayaks will be available for hire should you require. Further information will be provided upon registration.

APPLICATION
Read through the Course information or download the brochure to see which courses interest you.  Bookings can be made via the online entry or by emailing Canoe SA at canoesa1@canoesa.asn.au.

Food and accomodation are not included in the course fee and are the responsibility of the participant.  Participants are invited to stay at the Victor Harbor Caravan Park, bookings made through Canoe SA. Equipment and kayaks are avaliable to hire at reasonable rates but must be prebooked through Canoe SA.

Early bird rates apply for participants booking before February 26th.  Full fees apply beyond this date.

Introduction to Sea Skills $132 (Earlybird discount $120)

A one day course for those that have completed the ÔBasic SkillsÕ kayaking certificate that want to explore paddling at Sea. Participants will be taught introductory sea kayaking safety, equipment for sea kayaking, strokes, navigation, weather and planning. Depending on skills and experience, participants may be eligible to obtain the ÔIntroduction to Sea Skills AwardÕ.

Sea Skills $132 (Earlybird discount $120)

A one day course for those that have completed the ÔIntroduction to Sea SkillsÕ course, and wish to further their paddling skills. Participants will be taught more advanced sea paddling skills for paddling in moderate conditions, further navigation, advanced recovery including eskimo rolling, weather interpretation as well as increased depth in knowledge of sea kayaking equipment and safety. Depending on skills and experience, participants may be eligible to obtain the ÔSea SkillsÕ Award.

Theory:             7.00-9.00

Sea Skills Assessment $132 (Earlybird discount $120) 

A one day program for experienced sea paddlers, or those that have recently completed training. Participants are assessed for their competence to safely manage a boat in moderate conditions at sea as part of a group, with assessment focusing on personal planning and preparation, demonstration of skills including rescues, eskimo rolling, towing, paddling in the surf zone, navigation at sea, weather interpretation and minimal impact practices. Program includes a half day paddle and a half day surf kayak session. A take home theory test is provided to complement the theory assessment.

Sea Instructor Induction $400 (Earlybird discount $360)

A 3 day program for experienced sea kayakers who wish to instruct and manage expeditions at sea. Usually participants have completed the ÔSea Skills AwardÕ prior to commencement, but this can be assessed concurrently with the induction (extra fee of $60 required). Participants will receive instruction in leadership, group management, risk management, expedition leadership, logistics, planning and teaching kayaking skills at sea.

Theory: Fri 9th March 6.00-9.00, Sat 10th March 7.00-9.00, Sun 11th March 7.00-9.00

Practical: Sat, Sun, Mon 10-12 March 8.00-4.30 each day. Locations to be advised, but program based at Victor Harbour Caravan Park


 

Sea Instructor Assessment $400 (Earlybird discount $360)

A 3 day comprehensive program for trainee instructors that have completed training and experience required for assessment. Following successful submission of a log book, participants will be assessed on planning, group management, risk management, use of communications equipment, navigation, instructional skills, weather interpretation, guiding skills, equipment use and knowledge, sea kayaking skills and knowledge. A theory test follows the practical assessment. Note: Additional cost of $140 for registration as a sea kayak instructor.

A 2 day practical program assessing paddling ability in advanced sea conditions. A pre-requisite is the Sea Skills award and submission of a log book of experiences required. Details to be provided on registration.
