Juniors take on the world in Racice, Czech Republic

Sunday 29 July

Mathew Goble raised Australian hopes at the junior worlds today winning his K1 500 metre semi final in a time of 1 minute 42.214 seconds. Goble lay in third place at the 250 metre mark but overtook Portugal's Fernando Pimenta and Canada's Shaun Fair in the closing stages of the race to earn his place in this afternoon's final.

Megan Rose and Amy Peters brought further cheer to the Australian team by winning their K2 500 metre semi final ahead of Great Britain and Romania in a time of 1 minute 48.05 seconds. The Australian women trailed by almost two seconds midway through the race and then overhauled the fading Romanians to win by a second ahead of the British crew.

In other races, Sarah Dehey was 6th in her women's K1 500 semi final in a time of 2 minutes 0.881 seconds and will progress to the B final later today.

The women's K4 crew of Lauren Smith, Lani Belcher, Sarah Dehey and Bernadette Wallace missed out on the A final by one place, finishing fourth in their semi final in 1 minute 43.178 seconds. The crew will progress to the B final.

Chris Sirote, Haydn Boon, Rhys French and Sam Norton were 8th in the K4 500 metre semi final in 1 minute 29.772 seconds and missed the cut for the B final.

Saturday 28 July

Saturday was semi final and finals day in the 1000 metre events at the junior world championships in Rasice, Czech Republic.

Dane Wilkinson finished second in the B final of the 1000 metre K1 event behind Uladisalv Shkrbabav of the Ukraine in a time of 3 minutes 39.403 seconds.

Bernadette Wallace was fourth in her B final in the women's K1 1000 metre event in a very close finish which saw second to fourth places finishing within three tenths of a second.

Lauren Smith and Lani Belcher also found themselves in a  close finish in the K2 womens's 1000  metre B final, placing fourth less than a second behind the winning crew from Uzbekistan.

In other races today, Luke Hanniford and Sam Norton finished 8th in the K2 1000 metre semi final and the men's K4 crew of Chris Sirote, Haydn Boon, Rhys French and Matt Goble also finished 8th in their K4 1000 metre semi final.

Friday 27 July

Matt Goble finished second in his 500 metre K1 heat in 1 minute 40.77 seconds. Dane Wilkinson and Bernadette Wallace finished fourth in their respective 1000 metre heats. The women's K4 500 metre crew placed third in the 500 metre heats as did Sarah Dehey.
