Introduction to Sea Kayak Skills

A one day course for paddlers that have completed the Basic Skills kayaking award and want to explore paddling at sea. Participants will be taught introductory sea kayaking safety, equipment for sea kayaking, strokes, navigation, weather and planning. Depending on skills and experience, participants may be eligible to obtain the Introduction to Sea Kayak Skills Award.

Sea Kayak Skills

A one day course for paddlers who have completed the Introduction to Sea Kayak Skills course, and wish to further their paddling skills. Participants will be taught more advanced sea paddling skills for paddling in moderate conditions, further navigation, advanced recovery (including rolling), and weather interpretation, as well as increased depth in knowledge of sea kayaking equipment and safety. Depending on skills and experience, participants may be eligible to obtain the Sea Kayak Skills Award.

Sea Kayak Skills Assessment
$132: Early bird discount $120
A one day program for experienced sea paddlers, or those that have recently completed training. Participants are assessed for their competence to safely manage a boat in moderate conditions at sea as part of a group, with assessment focusing on personal planning and preparation, demonstration of skills including rescues, rolling, towing, paddling in the surf zone, navigation at sea, weather interpretation and minimal impact practices. Program includes a half day paddle and a half day surf kayak session. A take-home theory test is provided to complement the theory assessment.

Sea Instructor Induction
$400: Early bird discount $360
A 3.5 day program for experienced sea kayakers who wish to instruct and manage expeditions at sea. Usually participants have completed the Sea Skills Award prior to commencement, but this can be assessed concurrently with the induction (extra fee of $60 required). Participants will receive instruction in leadership, group management, risk management, expedition leadership, logistics, planning and teaching kayaking skills at sea.

Sea Instructor Assessment
$400: Early bird discount $360
A three day comprehensive program for trainee instructors who have completed training and experience required for assessment. Following successful submission of a log book, participants will be assessed on planning, group management, risk management, use of communications equipment, navigation, instructional skills, weather interpretation, guiding skills, equipment use and knowledge, sea kayaking skills and knowledge. A theory test follows the practical assessment. Note: Additional cost of $140 for three year registration as a Sea Kayak Instructor.
