Introductory Skills for Sea Kayaking

Course dates: Sunday, 7th September 2014, Sunday, 21st September 2014, Sunday, 12th October 2014 (see session outline below)

Canoe SA announces a course designed to provide paddlers who have basic kayak skills the knowledge and competence to undertake sea kayaking activity in controlled conditions under the supervision of an Instructor or Guide

Controlled conditions are defined as:

  • Winds no more than 10 knots (19kph)
  • seas less than 1 metre
  • surf no higher than 0.5 metre (measured at breaking wave face)

Entry conditions – Introductory Skills for Sea Kayaking

  • over 15 yrs of age
  • able to swim 50 metres fully clothed for paddling
  • able to demonstrate a safe comfortable wet exit, fully equipped for paddling

Workshop 1 – Sunday, 6th September 9.00am – 4.00pm

Location: Canoe SA West Lakes – Aquatic Reserve, Bower Rd, WEST LAKES

The emphasis will be on gaining an understanding of the principles of paddling and the use of various paddle strokes to demonstrate good boat control. Capsize, rescues and towing will also be introduced and practised.

You will need the following:

Sea Kayak (or suitable SOT) fitted with deck lines (if you dont have a craft please let us know so we can organise hire)
Personal floatation device (pfd), spray-deck (where using a sea kayak) and suitable paddle
Paddling clothing suitable for the conditions on the day

Workshop 2 – Sunday, 21st September 9.00 – 4.00pm

Day Paddle & Skills Sessions – Seacliff (meet by the SYC boat ramp)
We will be launching and landing in a controlled environment.
Skills, boat control in an area where the  environment will have a greater influence than a flatwater or inland waterway.
As we may not be close to the launch location at lunch you will need to carry your lunch/snacks in a waterproof container or dry sack.
Please note: the location and programme for the day is dependent on the forecast or actual conditions encountered on the day.

Workshop 3 – Sunday 12th October, 9.00 – 4.00pm

Day Paddle & Skills Sessions –  Port Noalunga (meet at the southern end of the carpark on the Esplanade)
Paddle skills in a variety of small waves and rebound waves. A gradual progression to an environment that has more variables and therefore more risks that may be encountered.
As we may not be close to the launch location at lunch, plan to carry your lunch/snacks in a waterproof container or dry sack
