I’m going to begin by introducing the team. My name is Emily Rozee and together with Gayle Herman, Donna Hamilton, Elise Lavers, and Annette Johnson we are a team of enthusiastic young women, aged between 20-31, who have been brought together with the shared goal of completing a kayak crossing of Bass Strait in January in 2014.
Under the guidance and coaching of kayak instructor, Malcolm Hamilton, we have passionately taken on this challenging goal. We have all made many sacrifices, putting our lives on hold for a year to work on the mental, physical, tactical and technical elements that are required to complete a Bass Strait crossing. We began our preparation approximately 12 months ago and we have definitely come a long way as a team, completing a Wilsons’ Promontory expedition, a Spencer Gulf crossing, 150kms of the Murray Paddling Marathon and recently two weeks of training in Tasmania.
With just over two months remaining before we set off we are busily completing final maintenance to our boats, dehydrating food, meeting with experts on a variety of topics including first aid, nutrition, weather interpretation and emergency responses and training.
We have been fortunate enough to have already had much interest in our group and goal, with many respected companies and individuals in the South Australian Paddling industry getting on board and offering us their support, as well as having nearly 400 people following our journey on our Facebook page.
This group is unique, being all female, all young, all fun loving, and all sharing an unrivalled determination to see their goal through.
We would love for you to become a part of our journey. Over the next couple of months we will be writing a few words for ‘Wash Ride’ about our final preparation. Also please feel free to contact us. Any support you are able to offer would be much appreciated.
Until next time,
The Bass Babes
